What The? Wednesday

marketing to children

Of course this is a parody.

But as with all parody’s there’s truth in there somewhere.

Although Barbie was one (if not the) first sexualised doll she’s looking pretty tame compared to more recent creations by toy manufacturers.

Toy manufacturers will continue to push the boundaries of what is acceptable for children unless more parents take a stand.

Who knows? Give it a few years and we’ll probably think that teen pregnancy Barbie is a completely harmless must-have for little girls.

This parody isn’t so far from the truth.

What toys have you seen that are completely inappropriate for children?

Have Something To Say ?

Those Monster High dolls are seriously disturbing. I was recently at a 6 year olds birthday party where this was given as a gift. It made Barbie (the 6 of them that were given) look like a little pristine demure saint.

I’m slightly terrified of having parties for my little girl as she grows up… What will I write on the invitations? ‘No dolls allowed?!’

Yes indeed. A little girl brought one with her to church the other day – I nearly choked. There’s a real darkness about them too – like it’s cool to sexualised, dark and depressed. There was a really great article about a blogger who met with Mattel about the problem with Monster high dolls. I’ll attach it here and link to it on FB.

I feel the same about the ‘Bratz’ dolls.
Why oh why did anyone think calling a children’s toy ‘Bratz’ was a good idea.

What do you do when your daughter receives these as a gift. Do you tell your daughter that she can’t have these things? Should you accept gracefully and then sell or donate privately. #gotallthistolookforwardto

Emma, yep – they suck for more than a few reasons. It’s cool to be a brat?

Danya Banya..ha! Me too…. My close friends wouldn’t give my daughter something like this as they would know I’m not a fan so assume it was coming from someone who didn’t really know me or my daughter then I’d be nice ;) and gracefully accept and get rid of it quietly. Those are my views and not everyone shares them and it’s not always helpful to offend people..but I haven’t found myself in that situation yet!
